Five-Maudies – Highly recommended

La Maison Chef Heinz

La Maison Chef Heinz

Without a doubt, the best restaurant in Augusta. Very upscale, you actually get sorbet before the main course. You can wear a shirt and slacks. I would not recommend jeans or t-shirts. This is the ideal place for a romantic dinner.

Wine list is exceptional, has been commended by Wine Spectator (only one other Augusta restaurant, Augustino’s, has had this honor. The ambiance is wonderful and elegant in an old Victorian house in downtown Augusta. Their bar area (great selection of aged Scotch) is also a tapas restaurant called Veritas, but this review is for the full restaurant.

The menu is quite eclectic, hard to describe what type of food, perhaps New American or French Fusion. Wait staff is always outstanding and they know how to pair wine with the food that also takes into consideration your budget and wine preferences.

The best fish (sea bass) I’ve ever had was a special here, Chef Heinz can’t put

La Maison Mussels

it on the menu because he can’t always get the proper quality. There is a nanosecond between an underdone and overdone fish and almost all restaurants in Augusta overcook fish. Not at La Maison, the bass was moist and had the perfect consistency and flavor.

On the normal menu, I usually have the duck or lamb only because I love these two meats so much and Chef Heinz does them so well. The duck is Maple Leaf Farm Duck Breast, cooked crisp, with Grand Marnier sauce and dried cherry rice pilaf. The lamb is Rack of Lamb, with apricot teriyaki glaze, multi-grain rice blend. A specialty is an ostrich filet that I have heard nothing but good things about. I have had the Smoked Ostrich Carpaccio with arugula, vine-ripe tomato, Parmigiana Regiano shavings, misted with truffle oil and it is excellent.

They also offer buffalo and antelope if you are so inclined, along with filet mignon, salmon and veal. The Lobster Bisque is divine, as is the Mussels Poulette appetizer. The Creme Brulee and Chocolate Chili are both incredible desserts.

Bottom line is you can’t go wrong here.
