Just watched the first episode of Next Iron Chef – Redemption. I have mixed feelings and it almost seemed like a scripted setup on the first elimination.
First, I have to say that I no longer watch Iron Chef America and it used to be my favorite show. I guess that that Food Network management decided that clebrities as judges are better than people who actually know something about food. Bimbo actresses, rap stars, and football players are not qualified to be gourmet food judges and the show really suffers for it. They may have one out of three who should be a judge on a given show. I saw an interview with Mario Batali where he said he left Iron Chef because of they got rid of decent judges.
However, I still like Next Iron Chef. I also like the judges this year. But this episode was just a little suspicious. The chef who went out first on his previous
season was in the elimination round this time around, Spike Mendelsohn. There was no way he was going to be first eliminated again. The other chef in the elimination round was Chef Love, who was too irreverent for the judge’s taste. And, of course, he was eliminated. None of the Food Network and fan favorites were eliminated, only one of the most obscure to the television audience. This all just seemed very scripted and preordained. Maybe I am wrong, but this was my impression of the first show.
