I was recently given a Polish Army MRE (Meals Ready to Eat or, more appropriately, Meals Rejected by Ethiopia). There are times here that I simply cannot stand to go to the mess hall. I do have limits. So, I decided to try out the Polish MRE.
Compared to a US Army MRE, the Polish MRE was better. My only real complaint was that the crackers are as hard as rocks. If you can get past that, they taste a lot better than US crackers. And, when I have to eat US MREs, often the only thing I eat are the crackers and whatever spread comes with them (processed cheese, processed jalepeno cheese, or creamy peanut butter). That fills you up if you can’t stomach the “entrees.” US MREs aren’t the worst thing ever, but I have had C-Rats that were better (and worse).
The downside to Polish MREs is there are only two kinds, the one I had and one with little sterno type heaters to warm whatever is in them. Hopefully, I’ll get to try one of those at some point. There is far more choice with the US MRE selection.
Here is what was in the MRE:
- 2 packs of hard but tasty crackers
- 1 small can of something like luncheon meat
- 1 small can of liver pate
- 1 tube of Mleko, a very sweet substance kind of like sweet condensed milk
- 1 packet of powdered lemonade
- 1 packet with plastic fork and knife
- 1 hard coffee candy
- 1 fruit flavored hard candy
- 1 packet sugar
- 2 packets instant coffee
- 1 small container of honey
- 1 packet of matches
- 1 moist towelette
- 1 napkin
- 1 strip of chewing gun
- 1 plastic bag for garbage (maybe?)
Now, most foods like this aren’t known for quality ingredients, but I found the luncheon meat quite good and better than
the typical US grocery store luncheon meat/deviled ham type stuff. The liver pate was really quite good, soft and mild. The two packs of crackers, four total, were enough for both cans. The Mleko paste was to die for, but I have been known to open a can of sweet condensed milk and consume the entire thing. The powdered lemonade was typical, it produced a decent tasting drink. The instant coffee was your usual instant coffee, nothing special and no creamer. All in all, a decent meal better than a US
MRE, but it would get old eating the same thing every day.
