Dust storm rolling in and flag at half-mast at Firebase Giro for Chief Corporal Jaroslaw Mackowiak

Often those at home in the US who support the troops aren’t aware of or don’t think about the troops there from other countries. In Afghanistan, I spent a lot of time with members of the Polish Army 17th Mechanized Infantry Brigade and made a lot of friends. These are some great guys and my favorite group were at Firebase Giro, the most remote and second smallest site I visited. I went there numerous times and it is literally surrounded by Taliban villages within sniper range. My main base of operations was FOB (Forward Operating Base) Ghazni, from which I travelled to the outlying combat outposts and firebases. While I was in the White Eagle area of operations, which was all of Ghazni Province, four Polish soldiers were killed in action and many wounded. I urge everyone to hoist a shot of good Polish vodka for each of these heroes.
